About the Bean Bag Food Program
No child should go hungry—especially in our own community.
But for many students in Souderton, Quakertown, and North Penn, school meals are their only reliable source of nutrition. When Friday comes, so does worry.
That’s where the Bean Bag Food Program steps in.
Our Mission
We provide weekend meals, encouragement, and support to children facing food insecurity right here in our neighborhood. Through a network of caring volunteers and strong community partnerships, we deliver food directly to the homes of children who need it most.
How It Works
We work directly with school counselors in our three partner districts—Souderton, Quakertown, and North Penn— to identify students experiencing weekend food insecurity. These trusted staff members help us discreetly connect with families who need support.
- Rather than asking children to carry food home (which can carry stigma), we deliver meals directly to their homes each week through a trusted team of volunteers. This model allows us to:
- Reach children even when schools are closed.
- Remove transportation challenges for parents or caregivers.
- Ensure each child receives food, regardless of the home environment.
Each bag is packed with care, encouragement, and dignity—no red tape, no hoops to jump through. Just reliable support, week after week.
Our Story
The Bean Bag Food Program began in 2016, sparked by a powerful moment at Zion Mennonite Church, where a guest speaker revealed that nearly 50% of families at a local elementary school were living at or below the poverty line.
Inspired by other food programs around the country, a small group of volunteers started delivering meals to 20 students at one school. Within months, additional schools in Souderton asked to join. We’ve been growing steadily ever since—adding one or two schools each year and staying focused on local kids, local needs, and local solutions.
Why “Bean Bag”?
In nearly every culture, beans are a symbol of nourishment—affordable, simple, and life-sustaining. The name reflects our mission: to raise awareness of food insecurity, provide dependable nutrition, and care for the children in our own backyard.
The Bean Bag Food Program is a public charity recognized as tax-exempt by the IRS under Section 501(c)(3).
Powered by the Community
This program is made possible by people like you. Local businesses, volunteers, donors, and school staff all play a role in getting food to children who need it.
- Donors make every bag possible
- Partners extend our reach
- Volunteers pack and deliver meals
- Schools help us connect with families in need
Hunger doesn’t just affect individuals; it impacts entire communities. When we come together, we can change that.
We’re always looking for more volunteers, drivers, and community partners.
Right now, we’re especially looking for a few people to join our event planning team. Whether you’d like to sponsor a food drive, pack bags, or make a one-time or recurring donation, we’d love to have you on the team.
